Building Futures: Celebrating WA’s Rising Apprentices at the 2025 HIA-Stratco Awards

Sep 24 2025

At Stratco, we believe the future of the building industry lies in the skill, passion, and commitment of its apprentices. That’s why we are proud to once again partner with the Housing Industry Association (HIA) to celebrate Western Australia’s most promising young tradespeople at the 2025 HIA-Stratco WA Apprentice Awards.

This year’s event shone a spotlight on the next generation of builders, carpenters, and bricklayers; individuals who not only demonstrate technical excellence, but also the determination and leadership qualities that will shape the future of construction across the state.

Honouring WA’s Top Apprentice

The highest recognition of the evening went to Ty Jones, who was named both the 2025 HIA-Stratco WA Apprentice of the Year and the 4th Year Apprentice of the Year. Ty, employed at the Finnigan Group, impressed judges with his strong communication skills, professional approach, and ability to problem-solve on major projects, including the Armadale Train Station redevelopment and work in regional Broome.

Beyond his on-site achievements, Ty is committed to continuous learning—planning to extend his TAFE qualifications with further university studies. His ambition and professionalism set the benchmark for apprentices across the industry, and Stratco is proud to celebrate his outstanding accomplishments.

Rising Stars Across Every Stage

The awards recognised apprentices across all stages of their training, highlighting the diversity of pathways and opportunities in the building industry:

Sam Hegney - 2nd Year Apprentice of the Year
From Woodleigh Home Improvements, Sam entered the trade as a mature-age apprentice and has quickly demonstrated his reliability and drive. With an eye firmly set on becoming a registered builder and business owner, his journey reflects the resilience and adaptability that strengthens our industry.

Albert Anderson - 3rd Year Apprentice of the Year
Hosted by Canning Carpentry, Albert has already shown strong leadership skills and an entrepreneurial mindset. His dedication to roof carpentry and ambition to one day run his own business highlight the opportunities that skilled trades can offer.

Holly Burrows - Judges’ Excellence in Endeavour Award
Working with Baldivis Bricklaying, Holly is a role model in a traditionally male-dominated trade. With leadership training under her belt and a determined, professional outlook, she has impressed judges with her calm approach to challenges and her commitment to personal growth.

Jesse Tatam - Judges’ High Commendation
Bringing prior experience in electrical and refrigeration, Jesse has carried his passion into carpentry. Judges praised his professionalism, precision, and career ambitions, signalling a bright future in the construction sector.

Recognising Mentors Who Shape the Industry

Behind every successful apprentice stands a dedicated trainer. This year, the 2025 HIA Host Trainer Award went to Noel Cooper of Baldivis Bricklaying. With more than 45 years of industry experience, Noel’s mentorship has helped guide and inspire apprentices like Holly Burrows to succeed and thrive.

As HIA WA Executive Director Michael McGowan highlighted, Noel’s contribution represents the best of the industry: "Noel’s dedication to nurturing apprentices sets a high benchmark for trainers across the state."

Why Apprenticeships Matter

The HIA-Stratco Awards are about more than just recognising individual excellence. They demonstrate how construction apprenticeships provide life-changing opportunities; building careers, fostering leadership, and contributing to the wider community.

Michael McGowan noted that apprenticeships are supported not only by strong training pathways and mentoring but also by growing government incentives. This ensures the sector remains accessible, sustainable, and attractive for the next generation of tradespeople.

At Stratco, we see this every day. Apprentices bring fresh energy, new ideas, and a passion for quality that strengthens the industry from the ground up. Supporting apprenticeships is not only an investment in people, but in the future of Australian construction.

Why Stratco is Proud to Support the Awards

Our partnership with HIA for these awards reflects our deep commitment to fostering talent and celebrating excellence. Stratco has always been about more than products; we are about people, growth, and building a stronger future together.

By recognising apprentices at every stage of their journey, we help create pathways that inspire, motivate, and encourage young people to dream big within the trades. These awards showcase that apprenticeships are not just jobs, but careers filled with possibility, achievement, and pride.
