Your Aussie Spring Checklist
As winter fades and the jacarandas begin to bloom, it’s time for an important ritual in many Australian homes - spring maintenance for your rain harvesting systems. This includes your gutters, downpipes, rainwater tanks and more. If you need any new or replacement rain harvesting solutions, we're here for you:

With water scarcity a growing concern across the country, more Aussies are turning to rainwater harvesting as a sustainable and cost-effective solution. But like any hardworking system, your rainwater tank and its components need regular care. Spring is the perfect time to perform some maintenance.
Here’s an Aussie-proof checklist to help you get your rain harvesting setup in top shape for the Spring season.
1. Pre-Spring Inspection (Late Winter)
Before spring arrives, take stock of your entire system:
- Inspect gutters and downpipes for cracks, blockages, and rust
- Check for insect or vermin nests around entry points
- Look for signs of overflows or backflow issues near your tank or first flush diverter
2. Gutter Cleaning: The First Line Of Defence
Blocked gutters are a major source of tank contamination—and a fire hazard in drier areas.
Gutter Cleaning Tips:
- Visit your local Stratco store for gutter cleaning and trimming tools, like this Cyclone Gutter Cleaner Ensure you take care when working at heights with the appropriate safety equipment.
- Alternatively, engage a professional who can carry out this task safely for you. Have them trim overhanging branches, especially from eucalyptus trees known for sticky leaves and sap
Stratco Tip: Install gutter mesh to reduce future blockages. Try our gutter mesh kit builder to design and order the right mesh for your roof.
3. Downpipe And First Flush Diverter Maintenance
Your first flush diverter captures the initial (and dirtiest) rainwater—making it a must-clean.
Steps:
- Remove the end cap or drain valve
- Empty any standing water and debris
- Check the outlet for any blockages
Products like the First Flush Carrot – operate without the use of a traditional first flush ball float or chamber. If you have a First Flush Carrot, it is important to periodically unscrew the Carrot housing and check that the unit is functioning properly.
For best results and minimal maintenance, we recommend installing rain heads such as the Rain Harvesting™ Leaf Eater Stream or Leaf Eater Advanced on all downpipes to limit the volume and number of leaves and debris that reach your first flush diverter. The image below shows how these products integrate with your existing downpipes and gutters.
4. Mosquito Prevention: An Aussie Must
Warm months bring mozzies—and your rainwater tank could be the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Preventive Measures:
- Ensure all inlets/outlets to your tank are fitted with mosquito-proof mesh (0.955mm or smaller)
- Use a Mozzie Stoppa or similar mosquito-proof screening solution on inspection points and overflow pipes
Pipes in “wet” or “charged” rain harvesting systems can often hold water. Periodically draining water-holding pipes will ensure that your rainwater remains at its freshest and insects don’t have a chance to breed in stagnant water.
5. Check And Replace Filters
Spring is the ideal time to perform maintenance on your post-tank filtration system.
The type of maintenance you need to complete will depend on the style of filter that you have. Some systems will require you to periodically wash the cartridges, others will require you to replace the cartridges.
Always follow the maintenance instructions of your specific filter but know that now is a great time to check that everything is in working order.
6. Pump Maintenance: Keeping The Flow Going
If you’re pumping water for toilets, irrigation, or household use, don’t overlook your pump.
Quick Pump Check:
- Inspect for leaks, rust, or corrosion
⚠️ Call a licensed professional to undertake pump maintenance.
7. Upgrade Your Rainwater System with Smart Monitoring
Spring is the perfect time to rethink how you use—and manage—your water more effectively.
Consider Adding Smart Monitoring Tools:
Take your system to the next level by integrating smart-enabled products like the Tank Gauge Plus and Rain Gauge.
These tools help you track water levels, monitor rainfall, and make informed decisions about how and when to use your stored water—directly from your phone or device.
Cleaner Water, Smarter Systems
A well-maintained rainwater system not only improves your water quality but also extends the life of your tank, pump, and filtration setup. Regular care, seasonal checks, and smart upgrades help you make the most of every drop - especially in a country where water is precious.
